Outcome One: In Class SAC Essay
You will be expected to write a full-length essay under exam conditions in class on the Great Depression in Australia. Historically the essay questions in the exam have focused on either how Australians responded OR how the Depression threatened the cohesion of society. Every year so far the essay question has been a statement followed by "To what extent do you agree with this statement?" This means you MUST (a) make a judgement/take a position BUT also (b) acknowledge the COUNTER ARGUMENTS.
For instance in 2012 the question was: ‘Unemployment threatened the cohesion of Australian society during the Depression.’ To what
extent do you agree with this statement?
Now if you agreed you could discuss:
1. How unemployment was a influential factor in society facing a "moral crisis" as people turned to petty crime, prostitution, push gangs amongst youth and that neighbours dobbed eachother in for cheating the dole or the susso
2. The rise of communism and radical left politics, UWM, the rise of the reactionary far-right like the New Guard and the instability of the Labor government
3. BUT you would also discuss how people actually worked together as a community, the role of charity organisations like the Salvation Army in helping all unemployed, how they still got to enjoy various forms of entertainment, how societal structures did not change much and that many people actually did quite well during the Depression - financially and socially.
