Outcome One: SAC
Analysis of a Visual and Written Document
In this SAC you will be required to demonstrate key knowledge of the above dot points through the analysis of ONE Visual document and ONE Written document. The structure of the questions will be very similar to Section A of past History exams. For each document analysis a set of questions will appear as the following:
1. Identify from the image/document TWO examples of...(eg. exclusion of aborigines; the hardships of settling in the Port Phillip District, the wealth of early Melbourne, etc.) 2 Marks
2. Identify and explain TWO specific reasons that may have... (led to the exclusion of Aborigines, led to squatting in the PPD, led to the population explosion in Melbourne, etc.) 4 Marks
3. Explain TWO factors for...(the massive population loss of Aborigines, increased expansion of the pastoral industry following the establishment of the Port Phillip District; the blurring of social-classes in Melbourne). 6 Marks
4. To what extent were...(Aborigines victims of European colonialism; squatters the catalyst for the settlement of the Port Phillip District; was the Gold Rush the impetus for democratic reform in Victoria). 8 marks
You are to demonstrate key knowledge in the following areas:
- Ideas underpinning the settlement of and migration to the Port Phillip District, including ideas about European expansion in the new world and land ownership, and the motivations of some individuals and groups;
- The impact of European settlement on the Aboriginal communities of Port Phillip and their responses to it;
- The impact of the gold rushes and the way gold changed people’s visions of the future of the colony.
